The Great British Tennis Weekend

at Pen-y-ffordd Tennis Club

Sunday 17th May 2015

Pen-y-ffordd Tennis Club has held its second ever GBTW event and it was a huge success!  The club was swamped with visitors at 2pm on Sunday 17th May such that, at the end of the three hour event, over 100 attendees had been signed in!

The event gave anyone and everyone a chance to try tennis for free, with the club's lead coach Mike Herd assisted by coach Sam Glandenning in providing some great fun activities, such as Mini Tennis for 3-11 year olds, Tennis Xpress and Cardio Tennis.  There was also a Family Time area where parents and children could have a go with some low-bouncing Mini Tennis balls over a low net, and a "Free Play" court available all afternoon for people to just go along and hit a few balls.

The event in 2014 was well attended and was undoubtedly a success, however this year the number of attendees was signiticantly higher than last year's final count of 58 attendees.

A lot of effort went into promoting the event with it being advertised electronically on this website and on the club Facebook page, and also via Twitter and the BBC's Get Inspired website.  This was boosted by significant physical promotion in the form of the LTA-provided banner and the club's own banner at the Penymynydd roundabout, Tennis Wales' delivery of a number of postcards via Solus Distribution, and delivery of several hundred postcards customised for PTC on one side that were delivered by club member volunteers (thank you!)  And PTC even helped to boost the approach to event promotion by other clubs as the animated film made by committee member Nigel Edwards was watched by hundreds of people UK-wide!

It is hoped that the event has served to introduce many more people to the sport of tennis and will help maintain the healthy levels of membership achieved last year at PTC. And club funds were boosted on the day with the many generous raffle prize donations (again, thank you!) helping the draw to raise £57, which was boosted to £77 by a generous additional Â£20 donation.
