Resurfacing work to begin 9th April

Committee member Dave Hughes, who has been handling the process of getting quotes for court resurfacing (and was also one of the three committee members who put forward our successful application to a local trust fund), has received confirmation that, weather permitting, work will commence on resurfacing Court 1 and Court 2 on Tuesday 7th April.

This is a major event for Pen-y-ffordd Tennis Club - the current surfaces were laid around 30 years ago!

The work will be undertaken by Hawarden-based Platt Construction, who did the work at Denbigh Tennis Club a couple of years ago, and who are in the process of completely re-building the facilities at Mold Tennis Club.

The required weather conditions are reasonably flexible for the initial work to take place so unless there's a late dose of winter it's hoped that this work can start when planned.

The existing courts will not be dug up - this would have cost significantly more.  Instead, following moss treatment the existing courts will be drilled with holes across their surfaces, which will be filled with fine stones. This will aid drainage and also help adherence of the new porous macadam, which will be laid on top.  A border around the edge of the existing courts will be cut away to allow the new surface to be tapered to the existing kerbs (the kerb edges could have been raised, but again this would have added cost).

It's expected that Court 1 and Court 2 will be out of action for a week whilst this work takes place, when they will be marked with temporary white lines and left for a minimum of 5 weeks to allow for any bitumen seepage. At that stage the courts will be ready for their top-coat of coloured acrylic paint, and this cannot be done without reliably fine weather.  The painting work will, however, only put the courts out of use for a single day.

So, please be aware that there will be some disruption to court usage at these times, but we hope you agree that it'll be worth it!

If you've read this news page before you may know that the original start date for the work was 30th March, which was rescheduled to 7th April to accommodate Mike's Easter tennis camps, which was then rescheduled first to Monday 13th April and finally to 9th April, this time by Platt Construction.  We can only hope that the work will be completed in time to allow the Quorn Family Tennis Cup to go ahead as planned on Sunday 19th April.
